June 10, 2026 Andermatt: New Sports Centre with a Wide Range of Facilities Unveiled

With the further development of the sports zone, Andermatt Swiss Alps AG is bringing a central component of its vision for Andermatt to fruition. The sports centre, already envisaged in the 2008 masterplan, will be significantly more extensive than originally planned: a versatile venue for sport, leisure and socialising for the local population, second-home owners and guests.

The project fulfils a key promise made by Samih Sawiris. In response to requests, particularly from the local community, it has been significantly expanded: Instead of a simple indoor swimming pool with a fitness room, a comprehensive range of facilities is being created, including climbing, fitness, yoga, a leisure centre with a restaurant, a kids’ club, bowling, a family pool with an outdoor pool, a 25-metre pool, a spa, padel courts, as well as an outdoor ice rink and an events area. The planned floor area has been expanded from the original 2,300 square metres to around 5,000 square metres.

The sports zone, where the new centre will be located, is conceived as a sporting village square that connects Andermatt Dorf and Andermatt Reuss both spatially and socially. Ideas from the local community have also been incorporated into the development. The municipality of Andermatt conducted an online survey and a public workshop for this purpose. This revealed, in particular, a strong demand for a water park, fitness, wellness and family-oriented indoor facilities. The workshop also saw a strong push for climbing and ice sports facilities.

“We didn’t want to settle for a minimal solution but rather create something we can be truly proud of. I greatly appreciate that, after a considerable amount of time and collaborative work, we have now designed a diverse and modern sports centre that benefits both the local population and visitors alike,” says Samih Sawiris, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Andermatt Swiss Alps AG. “The development of the sports zone is an important milestone in the overall development of Andermatt. For us, however, it is about more than just a project – Andermatt is our home. That is why we have decided to go further and invest more in the sports centre than originally planned,” adds Naguib S. Sawiris, Board Member of Andermatt Swiss Alps AG and Chairman of the Board of Orascom Development Holding.

The new sports centre will complement the existing facilities in Andermatt, particularly in the areas of indoor, family and bad-weather activities. The operating company is to be jointly owned by Andermatt Swiss Alps AG and the municipality of Andermatt and will be established at the same time as the planning application is submitted. If everything goes according to plan, the planning application will be submitted in the coming weeks. Construction work is scheduled to begin next year, and the opening is currently planned for 2032/33.
