Environmental Monitoring Confirms the Effectiveness of Measures: Positive Results for Groundwater and further Progress in Nature Conservation

The year 2025 was once again marked by construction activities at Andermatt Swiss Alps, whilst environmental measures were consistently implemented and further developed. The environmental construction supervision team draws a positive conclusion overall: the measures taken to protect air, water, soil and nature are proving effective and are being continuously optimised.
Since construction began in 2009, environmental consultant Beat Hodel has been responsible for the overall environmental construction supervision. He is supported by a local environmental construction supervision team, which carried out a total of 38 site inspections in 2025. Environmental monitoring remained intensive due to the construction activities and was closely coordinated with the relevant authorities.
Construction work and developmentIn 2025, the focus was on work in Zone 4. The structural work on the 4C hotel ‘The Alpinist Andermatt’ continued, the FlyOver bridge was completed, and two apartment blocks were brought into use. At the same time, construction work began on three further buildings. In parallel, the development of Andermatt Reuss continues to be supported by comprehensive environmental construction supervision and environmental monitoring, covering both construction activities and the operation of the golf course, as well as ecological enhancement measures.
Emissions control: limits clearly metThe machinery used meets high environmental standards, particularly with regard to particulate filters and emission standards. Dust measurements show that levels were well below the legal limits in 2025. Even during noisy construction work, all requirements were met thanks to early planning and communication. No complaints were received from residents or guests.
Water protection: Further development of measuresMonitoring of water bodies showed stable values overall. No abnormalities were detected in the groundwater. New measures were developed for the treatment of construction site water to better control occasional pH fluctuations during rainfall in future. An optimised drainage concept was developed in collaboration with the specialist departments and will be further reviewed from 2026 onwards.
Groundwater at the golf course: no residues detectableThe results of the comprehensive groundwater monitoring at the Andermatt golf course are particularly encouraging. No residues of herbicides or pesticides were detected in any of the samples analysed. The results confirm the careful and restrained use of plant protection products.
Nature conservation: concrete progress and new habitatsSignificant progress has also been made in nature conservation. Several buildings on the golf course have been identified as important habitats for the highly endangered Alpine long-eared bat. Additional measures to support this species are being implemented. In addition, the cantonal nature reserve ‘Lebensraummosaik Neugaden’ has been expanded. The area combines various valuable habitats and makes an important contribution to biodiversity in the region. The golf course itself continues to be regarded as a pioneer in the Alpine region: a large proportion of the fertilisers and auxiliary materials used are of organic origin. The use of synthetic chemical plant protection products has been further reduced.
Waste and soil protection: significant improvementsWaste separation and disposal on construction sites have improved further. The relevant authorities view the situation positively. Targeted measures have also been implemented in the area of soil protection, including the creation of new green spaces and careful management of soil storage areas.
Joint commitment to the environment and quality“The positive results show that our consistent commitment to the environment and quality is paying off,” says Raphael Krucker, CEO of Andermatt Swiss Alps AG. “I would like to thank our partners, the companies involved and our employees, who contribute to the successful implementation of environmental measures with great dedication and a sense of responsibility. This shared commitment is crucial to driving the development of Andermatt Reuss in a sustainable and forward-looking manner.”
OutlookA reduction in construction activity is expected overall for 2026. At the same time, environmental monitoring will remain at a high level. The insights gained in 2025 will be directly incorporated into the further development of the measures.
Andermatt Swiss Alps continues to pursue the goal of driving the destination’s development in harmony with the environment and nature, and of creating a sustainable Alpine living and holiday environment in the long term.
